Budapest Classics Film Marathon
Heroines of History and Legend

Featuring:
Veronika Harcsa – voice
Kornél Fekete-Kovács – trumpet
László Gőz – wind instruments
Miklós Lukács – cimbalom

In the first thirty years of cinema history, when films were still running in cinemas without sound, hundreds of feature films were made in European countries, including Hungary, but only a small number of these have survived in their entirety or in fragmentary form, as neither the rapid spread of sound films nor the lack of archives favoured the survival of the genre. Since then, the surviving silent films have been sought, collected and restored in a number of institutions, which is not only an essential part of film history research, but also means a source of inspiration for contemporary artists. During September, BMC joins the Budapest Classic Film Marathon of the National Film Institute, where audiences can witness the dialogue between silent films and live music.

The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation looks after the legacy of the legendary Pathé film studio. Selected short films from the Foundation's collection will be interwoven with contemporary music as a limitless means of expression. The enchanting voice of the most popular Hungarian jazz singer at home and abroad, Veronika Harcsa, who is equally well versed in contemporary classical music, and the equally virtuosic and profound playing of Kornél Fekete-Kovács, László Gőz and Miklós Lukács transport the listener into a previously unknown world, while the drama of women's takeover unfolds from the dialogue between image and music.

Our offer

The series A Genius Is Born is a tribute to the male choir works by the three greatest Hungarian masters of music, so it is no coincidence that the concerts are taking place on the composers' birthdays. A special feature of the concert programme is that StEFREM's personal selection of works by the classical composers is complemented by outstanding and interesting pieces by their "heirs", the Hungarian composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

A „ballad” played by jazz musicians and singers is supposed to be slow and is typically about romantic feelings. What the leader of MAO, Kornél Fekete-Kovács adds regarding their choice of ballads for this program is that so much could be grouped here, anything that is rather introvert and fits the mood of the season. The repertoire of the big band contains a lot of traditional, and quite many unusual ballads.

The Daveform Quintet, specialised on modern jazz, creates a unique fusion of American, Scandinavian and Balkan jazz, with room for large-scale improvisations. From jazz ballads to contemporary classical music and sloppy grooves, the guys show off a wide range of musical devices.
